Untied Brewery: Laces Out For The Brie-kend

We hope you are not tied up this evening, because Untied Brewing Company is the place to spend National Beer Day. This may seem like a small and insignificant holiday, but it actually stands tall among praised holidays such as New Year’s Day and Christmas Day. What do all of these days have in common, you may ask. Well, they all have an “Eve” which is the day prior to the special day, resulting in a longer celebration period. So National Beer Day actually begins on April 6 and it is named New Beer’s Eve.

However, if you thought the fun facts ended there, you are in for a surprise! What makes National Beer Day so special? Why is it even celebrated in the first place? Well, you might remember a time long, long ago in 1920 when the government banned alcohol, called the Prohibition. Fast forward 13 years later to April 7, 1933 when Teddy Roosevelt came around (the best President in US history) and ended Prohibition. Go Teddy! Thus, National Beer Day as well as New Beer’s Eve was born to commemorate this important time in history. Plus, who doesn’t love a good excuse to crack open a cold brewski.

That’s enough history for one day. Let’s talk about the reason we’re here: Untied Brewing Company.

Untied Brewing Company Location

Located in New Providence, New Jersey, the brewery is a pretty quick and easy drive if you are located in Northern NJ. We visited the brewery during the Winter and the outside seating was sparse, located near the front entrance of the building. Perhaps during warmer months the outside seating is larger, but from our experience we recommend sitting inside. However, if you do choose to sit outside during the Winter, they did have heated lamps surrounding the tables. The building in general was a decent size, but it looked like it was being shared with another business.

Experience

The atmosphere within the building had a very modern vibe to it. With various couch seating, it gave off a living room “Friends” style which was very unique and welcoming. Since we brought out own charcuterie appetizer, we were able to assemble our platter and flights seated around a coffee table. The only necessary addition that would replicate our own apartment space would be a TV, a cat, and some pajamas. In addition to the social adult area, the brewery also has a children’s play area to keep the young-ins occupied during your stay. So do note that although it is a 21+ business, they do have accommodations for children as well.

If you’re not sure what you should be bringing with you on your trip, check out our list for reference!

Must Bring List:

  • Charcuterie and snack options
    • As a great food to munch on in between sips, bring a snack or even a cheese board to accompany what’s on draft.
  • Cozy Clothes
    • As the atmosphere is very casual and cozy, feel free to bring a blanket or wear something comfortable.
  • WATER
    • As always when filling up on beer, make sure you bring a water bottle to stay hydrated!

Drink Preferences

We did notice that the staff was not very knowledgeable on their beer selection. Because the brewery is relatively new to the industry, this is noted within their website. Due to this, they may not have many answers if you have questions about the menu. Unfortunately for our lactose conscious brie, Amber, they had a lack of knowledge on which beers contained lactose. If you peruse their menu, it appears like many of the options have chocolate, milk, or milk sugar so you should definitely be dairy conscious going into this brewery and steer clear of the milk porters.

In terms of their options, there were a few choices on tap that stood out to us.

If you love smoothies, the Profusely Fruity is definitely an alcoholic version of a fruit infused power drink you were looking for. As sweet as it is thick, this tasted more like a dessert than it did beer. However, if you enjoy light sour beers more like we do, this may be a tad bit heavy for your liking. They do also have a few seltzers on tap as more and more breweries are trying to incorporate them into their menu to stay up-to-date with the trends.

A few of our personal favorites were the Morning Breeze, Morning Meeting, Left In The Dark, and the Pioneer Ale. The Morning Breeze had just the right touch of a melon after taste, making it a great light summery lager. Both the Morning Meeting and Pioneer ale veer away from the fruitiness a bit, taking on a campfire theme. Between the graham cracker, chocolate, and bitter coffee flavors, they each emanate unique nodes of sweet and smoky.

Final Thoughts of Untied Brewery

Overall, we enjoyed our experience visiting Untied Brewing Company. Although the staff could have had a better understanding of the menu, they were very welcoming and accommodating to our large group. As it seems like they are expanding their outdoor area, it would definitely be worth the trip to check out in the warmer weather with friends. Have a safe and happy National Beer Day and remember, “…there is only one game at the heart of America and that is baseball, and only one beverage to be found sloshing at the depths of our national soul and that is beer.” -Peter Richmond
