National Pasta Day: Carbs Pair Better With Brie
Carbs are a girls’ bestfriend. Or wait, is that diamonds? Chocolate? Whether your go-to resonates more with glamour or Godiva, nothing brings more joy to the table than a homemade pasta dish. As one of the world’s favorite foods, it is only right that it receives a whole day of celebration to splurge on all things noodle-y.
As Federico Fellini once said, “Life is a combination of magic and pasta.” With over 600 pasta shapes to choose from, this expression certainly rings true. Despite the various shapes, each one is unique and purposeful. Unfortunately, we do not have time to speak about all 600, so we will just list some of our favorites.
The Pasta Shapes
Ditalini
Ditalini is a small, cylinder shaped pasta. This pasta is often found in various types of soup, but is an absolute staple in an Italian Wedding Soup. However, this pasta also makes a great comfort meal as a standalone, with only the accompaniment of some butter, chicken broth, and Pecorini Romano.
Linguine
Linguine is the perfectly balanced long pasta. Not too thin like Angel Hair and not too thick like Fettuccine, Linguine rests comfortably in the middle. Linguine aglio e olio is a traditional Italian dish that makes an easy weekday meal. Simply toss the pasta in a garlic and oil sauce, garnish with parsley, and then voila. If you want to take Linguine to the next level, opt to couple with clams instead. Both options pair fantastically with a bottle of red.
Rotini
Rotini is a very popular pasta with a corkscrew shape. As a result of the shape, it is capable of holding a lot more sauce and thus a lot more flavor per pasta. This pasta is perfect for an upgraded macaroni and cheese and even tastes great baked. Meanwhile, Tri-Color Rotini is the best candidate for making pasta salad. This pasta adds both color and depth to the salad.(For those that need clarification, pasta salad is vinegar-based while macaroni salad is mayonnaise-based. A very important distinction! Macaroni salad tastes best with Elbows.)
These are just three pasta types out of hundreds. It is National Pasta Day, so this is your chance to go out and explore!
Pasta Day Activities
- Go to your local store and buy a pasta that you have never tried before. Have fun with it! Buy the shape that stands out to you the most.
- Go home and make a pasta dish. Follow a recipe or create your own masterpiece.
- Snap a beautiful photo of pasta and post on social media. Don’t forget to tag our Instagram account if you do.
