Our Boozy Adventure to The Warwick Valley Winery and Distillery
Picture this: You have a beautiful Sunday afternoon open with not a worry in sight. The thought of sipping a crisp glass of chilled wine overlooking the picturesque mountainside sounds like quite the ideal escape. What better to do then go to a local winery and bask in everything from wine to cheese and hills in between? That’s right, our boozy adventure did just that. Instead of our usual Sunday plans, we ventured off to the Warwick Winery and Distillery.
Location
As one of the most well known wineries in upstate New York, the Warwick Winery is definitely a hot spot. Just off the beaten path, this winery is located right on the cusp of New York and New Jersey. But this won’t be the only alcohol expenditure in the area. If you’ve heard of the town of Warwick, then you know it is a well-renowned fall favorite. Due to the vast New York lands, you’ll find everything from distilleries to vineyards. Not to mention a drive-in movie theater and a former prison turned brewery.
Experience
Since having explored Warwick Winery numerous times, we’ve experienced all that the destination has to offer. If you’re looking to visit in the fall, you definitely want to plan ahead. While there is ample seating, it does get crowded and can be hard to find a seat. With that being said, aim to get there early to secure a table for you and your friends. Otherwise, you can bring your own blanket and have a nice picnic in the vineyard instead.
In terms of their drinks, they offer flights and bottles for purchase (which we break down next). We recommend the flight to test out what they have to offer which comes with a complimentary whiskey, wine, or cider glass.
Although “technically” outside food is not allowed, with a large enough purse anything is possible. We decided to expand our horizons and try out Trader Joe’s Triple Creme Brie along with their Brioche Toasts. Together, it made for a delicious tasting companion.
While we’ve been there, we’ve noted a few essentials to bring to make for a great trip.
Must Bring List:
- BRIE (a must obviously)
- A slew of meats and cheeses
- A bag for the souvenir glasses to bring home
- Picnic blanket
- A camera (if you’re the type to take scenic selfies)
- Friends (or just yourself, we don’t judge)
Drink Preferences
Solely for the purpose of this post, we just had to try out all their flights. We’ve broken down ours below. If you’ve tried any of them out yourself and have other opinions, feel free to comment or send us a message.
Whiskey Flight
We went into this flight with a clear palate and an optimistic, open mind. As the Warwick Rustic Gin touched our lips and made its way to our tastebuds, we were met with utter disgust. The flavor was a combination of battery acid and nail polish remover. We quickly took a bite of brie to wash down the burning sensation. As we moved onto the Gin Pig, we thought it could not possibly get worse; it got worse. The flavor was the same as before with an added component of old dirt, the likes of which pigs roll around in. At this point, we were just trying to get through the rest of the flight. We took a short intermission of brie before gearing up for the next battle. Ironically, the last two were named Black Dirt 4 Year Bourbon and Black Dirt Rye. As if Gin Pig wasn’t dirty enough, these two literally have dirt in the name. Reluctantly, we quickly threw back the 4 Year Bourbon, stuffed a slice of brie in our mouth, and prepared for the final tasting. With a whopping ABV of 50% we were excited to at least get a buzz from this torture. We said a quick prayer and cheers’d one final time before slugging back the Black Dirt Rye. The description says perfect for sipping but in our opinion it’s more perfect for gifting to your worst enemy. Although we are not generally whiskey fans regardless, even avid whiskey drinkers who came with us were not as impressed.
Cider Flight
After the whiskey flight, we were very happy to be moving on to the cider. The Warwick Winery makes their own handcrafted cider using the fresh grown apples from their orchard. The brand, Doc’s Cider, is a very popular and well-known award winning cider. The Original Doc’s Hard Apple Cider was up first. It was pretty decent, although, it did have subtle hints of nail polish remover. If we had to choose between this or the Original Angry Orchard Cider, we would choose the latter. Next, we tried the Doc’s Hard Pear Cider. This cider was similar to the first one but it was a little more sweet and a little less strong which made it more favorable. It was especially delicious paired with our brie. The Doc’s Hard “Framboise” Raspberry Cider was good for the tasting but may have been a little too sweet for a full glass. Next up was the Doc’s Hard Dry Hopped Apple Cider. This cider was a little too bitter and hoppy for our taste, making it our least favorite. On the other hand, the Doc’s Hard Rosé Cider was our favorite. It was light with a tinge of sweetness which made it easy to drink it by the glass. Similar to the raspberry, the Doc’s Hard Pumpkin Cider had a good flavor but is too overwhelming to drink in large quantities. Overall, we enjoyed the cider flight selection!
Wine Flight
The last and final flight was the wine flight which we were most excited about. As wine lovers, we enjoyed all the wines on this list. Our top choices were the Riesling and Chardonnay. Our least favorite wines were the Dry Rosé and the Black Dirt Blush. When it comes to wine, we are not huge fans of an overly sweet wine. However, our friend who is an avid sweet wine drinker enjoyed the Black Dirt Blush most of all. The Harvest Moon and Black Dirt Red wines are in the middle of our rating. We enjoyed the flavors and would drink a glass of each but we would not buy a whole bottle. Overall, we enjoyed the wine flight!
Final Thoughts
We really enjoyed the atmosphere and the options that The Warwick Winery provides. We definitely look forward to coming back once the weather warms up a little.
